Hawwa Youngmark (they/she), also known as HawwaBe, is a freelance cartoonist and comic creator based in North Minneapolis. Their comics focus on telling stories of personal growth and cultural history, often through the lens of magical realism and graphic journalism. Hawwa is passionate about self-publishing and increasing visibility and resources for independent comics. In 2023, Hawwa co-founded the national Black Indie Comix Club, a communal space for black culture and comfort in the world of indie comics. Outside of comics, Hawwa is a quilter, having quilted since a young age with the matriarchs in their family, and an experienced teaching artist, educating in the foundations of drawing, digital design, and comics.

“Comics have always appealed to me as someone who loves to draw and read. How can I not love a medium that is the combination of both visual and literary arts? I cherish the comic art form for the way it allows me to express myself and share my stories.”

Some of Hawwa’s published works include Hawwa and the Battle of the Hot Mess Hair,Uhura, “Hi, It’s Mubina”, all self-published, and The Magic Bike Tour: A History of Minneapolis Parks Development, published by Hope Community.
