Annual Self-Portrait, 2020-

Fall 2018 and spring 2019, I was an artist in residence

In the summer of 2020, I was living through the

pandemic, quarantine, and the uprising following

George Floyd’s Murder. This was also the year I

finalized my divorce, moved into a new home, made

the decision to stop wearing hijab, stop removing the

hair that grew on my face from PCOS, and began my

journey with therapy. This was a hugely transitional

period in my life. It felt important to me to document

myself during this time. So I created my first digital

self-portrait in July. Taking the time to reflect on where

the year had brought me and putting that in a self-

portrait became an annual tradition for me.

Through the years, you can see me experimenting

with different sizes, styles, and techniques. In 2023,

you see me settle into traditional American comic

dimensions with the home that one day I can

publish them with my other comic work.
