Great River School Mural, 2021

In 2021, I was an artist in residence representing Juxtaposition

Arts at Great River School in St.Paul. At Great River, I worked

with a group of students and high school science teacher,

Scott Alsleben, to create a mural that encompassed the

values food justice, land sovereignty, and the importance of

indigenous peoples to the land. For this project I created the

curriculum, lead the ideation with the students, created the

final design, built and prepped the plywood mural surface,

lead the painting process, and sealed the piece.

The themes for the mural were informed by the work the

students had been doing in their science program with the

school’s community garden and farm. Once the mural was

finished, it was placed in the in the school garden. The group

of students was exclusively BIPoC to help create more space

that gave access to the land and nature.
