Fall 2018 and spring 2019, I was an artist in residence

representing JuxtapositionArts at Lucy Craft Laney

Elementary School in North Minneapolis. We

partnered with Lucy Laney’s Beacons program to offer

after-school programming that allowed 3rd-5th

graders to learn how to ideate, design, and create an

actual mural that would go in the school’s multi-

purpose room. This mural was meant to be inspired by

JXTA’s “Who We Are” mural that was torn down the

previous year. In this mixed media mural, students

able to work with mixed media materials to create

a mural that captured the essence of

the students at Lucy Laney.

Other artists on this project also included Zainab

Youngmark, portrait photographer and teaching

assistant, and Jahliah Holloman, studio and

teaching assistant.
